The 2009 version of Thorium Remix was very popular despite many flaws (including that whole copyright thing). The new Creative Commons Share-Alike 2011 version of THORIUM REMIX is much, much better. Please share. Please remix. If you buy DVDs of THORIUM REMIX 2011, feel free to make copies.

This project is a result of TEDxYYC hosting Kirk Sorensen in Calgary finally breaking a chicken-and-egg problem... I couldn't convince Kirk to come to Calgary without a compelling engagement, and I couldn't arrange any lecture venues for Kirk without a commitment on his part. So thanks to TEDxYYC for making this happen.

While Kirk was in Calgary, he spoke at Mount Royal University and PROTOSPACE. I then attended TEAC3 in Washington DC and captured many more thorium lectures.

So I finally had some hi-def footage of thorium lectures, as opposed to stealing poor video quality footage from Google Tech Talks. (Plus, I picked up a few interviews in Calgary and Washington.)

The result is not just a better video about LFTR, but a Creative Commons video which you are not only free to duplicate and give away... This is a video you can sell.

On April 9th & 10th, Calgary Open Source Software advocates held a 2 day festival to discuss the challenges facing open source software, and promote its adoption.

Downloadable and Creative Commons licensed recyclable copies of the video coverage can be found on Internet Archive. (Anyone without full Flash support in their browser might need to access the lectures that way.) But for YouTube hosted copies, I decided to experiment with YouTube Annotation Hyperlinks. They allow you to link from within one YouTube video to another. This allows me to show a brief summary of every event, and let the viewer click through if they would like to learn more.

On 2009-09-18, over 200 Calgarians gathered at SAIT to help advance Calgary's energy efficiency. In a future where the environmental costs of carbon are factored into economic decisions, how can an energy city like Calgary stay competitive?

Mayor of Calgary Dave Bronconnier points out our city is the largest consumer of renewable energy in Canada, and all city operations will be powered by renewable energy by 2012. Targeting the carbon footprint of City of Calgary's municipal operations will help keep our tax rates competitive as the cost of carbon starts to climb, but it does not guarantee our energy sector will continue to prosper.

Attendees brainstormed solutions in 5 categories:

"Energy Efficiency and Conservation"
"Energy Financing"
"Energy Awareness, Research and Training"
"Energy Sourcing / Renewable Energy Sources"
"Energy Legislation"

...which were then voted on. Top-ranked ideas were re-articulated by attendees in a manner to make them implementable and measurable.

Was it successful? Well it seemed good ideas were shared, and other than allowing more time for the teams to brainstorm and articulate I thought the exercises were extremely practical. It will be up to Calgarians, Imagine Calgary and PlanIt Calgary to see quantifiable results come of this.

I created an editorialized video which uses Skid Crease's themeweaving as narrative structure. It has been shortened to 56 minutes and is the easiest way for non-attendees to understand the summit. The video is called "Calgary's Low Carbon Future" and is available at R4NT.com.

I've isolated the meatiest presentation (by Rob Macintosh), documenting the challenge to Calgary's economy and how we can rapidly more to address it...

And the whole thing is available in chronological order as a single YouTube video... ...which I've chapter indexed at my personal blog.

Leader of Canadian Green Party, Elizabeth May shared her thoughts with me regarding the success of Sweden's Pirate Party. Does Canada need a Pirate Party? I've posted concerns about the effectiveness of single issue candidates running in Canada to R4NT.com.

I also followed Elizabeth around between Calgary Stampede breakfasts, to collect some stock footage of her pancake flipping. Between Marborough Mall and Chinook Centre, a series of tweets were posted by concerned supporters, that Elizabeth was forgetting about animal rights for the sake of a photo op at a rodeo (she was not, in fact, attending the rodeo).

The interaction between Elizabeth and her daughter (Victoria Cate) was quite interesting as they spotted the tweets, and formulated a response. This led to a quick discussion about social media, her daughter's role in helping manage it, and how tools like Twitter and Facebook facilitate communication between candidates and their supporters.

Video - CBC Rally in Calgary

On 2009-04-17, Calgarians headed to CBC's broadcast building on Memorial Drive to show their support for CBC, and to protest lack of support of CBC by the (currently conservative) federal government. I carted down a sign and videocamera, and after waving at traffic for 10 minutes ("is this what we do?") started asking fellow attendees questions about the CBC. The finished video is embedded in a R4NT.com blog post of a fictional nature.

Possibly the best point on the subject of CBC funding was articulated by DJ Kelly and Wil Knoll (but unfortunately captured by IndieCalgary.com and not myself): (paraphrased)

Although the CBC has become more self sufficient in its reliance on its ad revenue there was never an expectation of self sufficiency when the CBC was first created, and it is not fair to have that expectation now. CBC has been lucky that ad revenue has offset rising costs to taxpayers, but we're here to say we'll gladly pay for our CBC, and return to the original model which does not depend on ad revenues.

CBC currently costs Canadian taxpayers $34 per year, per citizen. I'm happy to pay that. In fact, as I explore this world of blogging, video production and avoiding anything that resembles what an investigative journalist would actually do, I'm quite certain that strong public broadcasting is key to maintaining a democracy through this transition period from newspapers to... whatever will replace newspapers.

Zack Snyder's film adaptation of Alan Moore's WATCHMEN is as brilliant as Moore's novel. Gary and I recorded our thoughts pertaining to its awesomeness as we drove home from the theater. The video was then used as part of R4NT.com's WATCHMEN review.

To sum up: Movie good. Alan Moore is brilliant but crazy for saying he'll never watch the movie. Zack Snyder's mental state is unknown at this time.

The master render is a 255 MB WMV file. There is a brief time lapse shot of me driving at night at the end which is potentially recyclable.

Everyone's doing mashups. Its a big ole mashup party, and I finally have time to participate. What happens? YouTube MUTES the audio. I missed the party.

So Vimeo it is. Anyway, this is just for fun and it won't happen again.

Every time i listen to HOUSE OF CARDS i think of 28 DAYS LATER. But while that would make for a very kinetic mashup, i'd like to expose people to THE DAY OF THE TRIFFIDS, which was the non-zombie inspiration for Danny Boyle's 28 DAYS LATER. TRIFFIDS is being remade by BBC for a 2009 release. Hopefully that will inspire younger readers to check out other Wyndham classics including THE CHRYSALIDS and THE MIDWICH CUCKOOS.

And for anyone who thinks global warming is Al Gore's invention (that plus the internet), check out Wyndham's THE KRAKEN WAKES. Evil aliens perform some geo-engineering on Earth by altering undersea currents. The end result is reminiscent of THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW, although without its unrelenting stupidity.

As a voter I've been frustrated during my last-minute-scramble to edumicate myself about local candidates before I run out to the polling station. (Citizenship is only something we need to worry about during an election after all.)

That's when I find there is nothing online. For federal parties and candidates, yes. But not a lot local ridings. There are only 308 federal ridings in Canada. How much effort would it take to videotape every debate and post them online, assuming one person from each riding took responsibility? Not a lot.

But technical hurdles and manpower might not be the ultimate obstacle to complete coverage of these events.

In 2006-07, I traveled around Europe including London. Took quite a few timelapse shots, and the first I'm posting is that of a ride in the London Transit/Tube system. Was hoping the stopping and starting of the car would be a bit more obvious, and could potentially be put in sync with some electronica. Now reviewing the footage I don't think that would quite work. Hopefully someone can put it to good use.

Internet Archive is hosting the various speeds, all in QuickTime 7 (H.264) format, HD resolution. The black edges which appear are me stabilizing the footage in post.

This x064 speed version is 70MB, and probably the best clip to get a feel for what the footage looks like, as it is a middle speed.

On 2006-05-19, SAIT (Southern Alberta Institute of Technology) Polytechnic had a Guest Speaker Day for Database Administrator and Object Oriented Software Developer classes.

Patrick Lor (Exec. V.P.) and Aaron Springer (Lead Dev.) described the company processes gave general career advice. They allowed me to videotape them, and place the footage in the public domain.

When Google Pages was announced, I signed up for beta testing, hoping that the 100MB of storage would solve some of my smaller video hosting needs. Unfortunately each file is limited to 9MB in size (Google says 10MB, but my downloads fail unless the files are significantly smaller). That's too small for me.

Now I ain't knocking Internet Archive, Google Video, MySpace and YouTube. They're all excellent services. But they have various verification processes which result in a delay before your video goes live, and they all have restrictions on what footage is considered acceptable. All but Internet Archive convert your original footage into their proprietary formats for their custom media players.

I want to:

Upload a video and start sharing it right away.
Let others download footage in the same format I uploaded it.
Upload "fair-use" clips which preclude Creative Commons licenses and Internet Arhive hosting.
Not worry about bandwidth (granted none of the other services here cap downloads).

Basically I just want a web hosting service with no bandwidth limits... like Google Pages. If only there was a way to get around the 10MB/file limit, we could use Google Pages to host a decently sized 100MB video.

The best solution I've found is creating a QuickTime "Reference Movie". This is an extremely small QuickTime file containing only pointers to movie data which can be dispersed across a number of 9MB files. But, the QuickTime Reference Movie can be used in video editing packages, and saved completely to a user's hard drive.

Requirements:

Original video project. We want to render our 9MB files from scratch, or else we'll lose quality to recompression.
QuickTime Pro 7. "Pro" lets us copy smaller QuickTime movies into a master QuickTime movie as references. "7" lets us use Apple's H.264 codec.
Google Pages account. They're not offering any new accounts at the moment, but you can always sign up to be put in the queue.

To beging creating your own QuickTime Reference Movie, open your video project and render out your movie in chunks 9MB or smaller.

The files need not be 9MB, any size smaller is fine. They need not be the same size. Your main consideration is making sure you don't render the same frames twice at the start and end of your chunks.

If you're using a PC you'll have to specify we're exporting a QuickTime movie. While good codecs choices are MPEG-4 or H.264, we must be sure to render these in a QuickTime file format. While QuickTime can play raw MPEG-4 (.MP4) and H.264 files, we won't be able to reference them in our master file. Too bad, since 3rd party codecs are often superior to Apple's (such as MainConcept's excellent H.264 codec).

Here I've already specified QuickTime, and am now specifying Apple's H.264 codec.

Once you've rendered out your chunks of video, try creating a test Reference Movie. Open your first 2 QuickTime movies simultaneously. On the seconds quicktime movie, hit CTRL-A then CTRL-C to put the second movie chunk into clipboard.

Switch to the first QuickTime movie, and move the slider to the (right) end of the first movie's timeline. Note the first movie's length.

Then (still in first QuickTime movie) hit CTRL-ALT-V to "Add to Movie" (different from Paste). The first movies duration should have approximately doubled (depending on how evenly divided you rendered portions of your video project).

Use "Save As" to save the first QuickTime player's contents as a Reference Movie. Give it a different name from all your existing movie portions.

Now this test QuickTime Reference Movie will only play on your computer, since the Reference Movie looks to your local box for the component videos. But if you've gotten this far, and the video plays, its just a matter of repeating the process with QuickTime files hosted on Google Pages. Close all your copies of QuickTime.

Upload all your video portions (except your test Reference Movie file) to Google Pages. My example also contains a single Windows Media video file. I haven't yet figured out how to repeat this process with Windows Media, so for now I'll be also letting visitors to my page download a very-low-quality Windows Media copy of my video as well.

Once they're uploaded, you can open them all back up... but from Google Pages and NOT your hard drive. Google Page's "Uploaded Stuff" list features live links, so a right-click and "Copy link location" in Firefox will put a video link's URL into your clipboard. Open every video using QuickTime using QuickTime's File, Open URL command. Open them all up, one at a time (I've found some downloads stopped on my machine if I opened too many at once).

Your desktop should look like a bloody mess.

Starting on the second player, CTRL-A, CTRL-C. Go to first player. Move slider to end of timeline. CTRL-ALT-V.

Go to third player, CTRL-A, CTRL-C. Go to first player. Move slider to end of timeline. CTRL-ALT-V.

Repeat until you've added all the segments to first player.

Save contents of first QuickTime player as a reference movie.

Upload the reference movie to Google Pages. Its the reference QuickTime file to which you'll add a hyperlink on your web page.

Test the video, have your friends test the video. Biggest concern is you've got a reference to a video file on your own hard drive somewhere in the QuickTime Reference Movie, so be sure to test on computers which are not your own.

Hope this approach is of help to people, and please let me know of any improvements you might have, or additional solutions for video hosting.

The spash page for my test project can be found at CalmReflection.Com. As of this moment, the "Bush's Response to 9/11" QuickTime link is the only Reference Movie found on the page.

Short video clips of Siggraph97, including part of a presentation by Douglas Adams regarding Starship Titanic video game creative process. Quality of this handheld video capture is poor. And the audio seems delayed although that is how we experienced it at the presentation. And I ran out of batteries before he even GOT to titanic, he'd only touched on Infocom by then... (cough, awkward pause). I'm not actively encouraging anyone to watch this video ("oh you gotta see this") but I found the tape, I loved Adam's work, and if someone's looking for Douglas Adams footage pertaining to Storytelling/Infocom, I ain't gonna deny them.

Sony DCR-TRV110 - Receive Infrared & Visible Light

The Sony DCR-TRV110 Nightshot switch can be jammed half-way between "Off" and "On" which disables the infrared LEDs and allows both visible light and infrared light to hit the CCD.

This is handy for shooting in low-light conditions, when you want to use all the available light possible, but don't want the distracting "beam" of infrared shooting from the front of the camera.

The CNN and Fox live news footage found in 9/11 Chronology I purchased in 2004 via eBay. After I completed the project, I deleted the digitized copies from my hard drives (they were too big to archive easily). Since I've been asked many times for copies of this footage, I re-digitized it and created a simpler split screen which I've posted to Internet Archive. (I can't post anything simpler then a split screen because the footage is copyrighted, and I need some sort of recontextualization of the footage or else IA will not host it.)

There are lots of source files which I've already described on a dedicated IA splash page here.

And please understand this "stock" footage is still copyrighted by CNN, FOX, etc. Documentaries are given greater flexibility under copyright law than works of fiction. You can presume (like I did with 9/11 Chronology) that you have recontextualized the footage enough to be safe, but FOX may not see it that way.

Daytime. Misc shots I took around Vancouver in mid-90s on a Hi8 camera. Came across them recently while looking for other footage, the clouds looked neat so I timelapsed them in AfterEffects and... well I think they look pretty darn neat. Amazing how crappy Hi8 footage can look quite clean when frames are blended together.

The remaining shots (traffic, plane, bird) are poor quality, but figured I should upload them in same clip in case they might be useful to someone.

The clouds were timelapsed so that all frames were treated as progressive (which is basically true, since very little motion takes place between fields). I rendered this out as progressive (and uncompressed) before re-rendering it as interlaced MPEG-2. This means if you choose to interpret the MPEG-2 footage as progressive (despite the MPEG-2 not being flagged as such), you can rotate or zoom in on the cloud portions without interlace artifacts. Yeah, zooming in on NTSC can show pixels quite quickly, but there's something about the cloud texture which seems to say "relax buddy, it won't be a problem".

Dusk. Canadian geese and goslings. I move towards them with camera on "steadycam", they run away. Used the camera-on-pipe-with-weight steadycam as described in MAKE Magazine. Footage is upside down because I turn the steadycam upside down to get camera close to ground, and reverse it in post production. Frames are progressive so no interlace to complicate the flip.

Was shot at 1280x720x30p (16:9). There was minor camera movement in raw footage, which I corrected (best I could) using Adobe After Effects 6.5's motion tracker. End result is black borders around image occasionally move a bit into the frame. Certainly this footage can be cropped in on to provide 16:9 or 4:3 coverage at NTSC resolution.

Video: Khan Leak - Did Bush Administration Leak Lead to London Bombings?

On 2004-08-01, the Bush Administration leaked the name of Muhammad Naeem Noor Khan, an arrested computer hacker in Pakistan who was actively collecting information on Al Qaeda. This blew an undercover operation which may have prevented the London bombings.

This video is a compilation of pertinent news footage. If anyone has any more clips (for example Rice stating that Khan's name was leaked "on background"), please send them to me and I'll incorporate them into the next version.

Robert Greenwald is looking for Walmart footage for his upcoming documentary. Hopefully some of this can be used as b-roll. Is generic footage inside and outside Walmart stores in Calgary, Alberta. Timelapsed 10x and 40x. The indoor footage is shakey to the point of perhaps being unusable. No matter how I affixed my camera to a cart or walker, the zoom and focus kept changing as I rolled over the concrete approaching the store.

I bought a copy of Naudet 9|11 DVD after watching "In Plane Site". Wanted to see what the raw frames looked like for the flashes. The flashes are there all right, but I don't think "In Plane Site" extrapolated correctly from the single frame of flash. I basically spent a few days taking in conspiracy theories and the rebuttals. This is a summary of my findings.

I'm deprecating this video. I still believe "In Plane Site" contains definite misinformation regarding bright flashes before impact of planes against world trade center (my video stands in that regard), but the argument is moot. "In Plane Site" no longer represents current conspiracy theory arguments. If you want to see a compelling 9/11 conspiracy theory video, watch Loose Change 2nd Edition (downloadable here). I am not vouching for its accuracy, nor saying it is incorrect. I have not yet formed an opinion either way (doing so will take some time). This is a chronological recap of 9/11 events, based on 9/11 Commission Report. 9/11 CR findings (and other pertanent news stories) are displayed at their appropriate times. Audio includes radio scan of firemen's radio frequencies.

CNN, Fox, Naudet and Booker Elementary footage play in a 4-way split screen. The CNN and Fox footage were aquired off eBay. Booker footage from BuzzFlash.Com and MichaelMoore.Com (both sites offered slightly different coverage).

By some of the copyright holders of course I mean Fox. But I wouldn't just drop it into a commerical project all willy nilly.

The Calgary Flames are competing with Tampa Bay Lightning for the Stanley Cup. Its so close Calgarians can taste it, and are ready to celebrate in an orgy of Stanley Cup lust. Beer is chugged. Boobs are flashed. But it could all end at any moment... those with lust in their hearts know they have to act fast.

Oh the heels of game 6, Richard prowls the streets of Calgary looking for Ms. Right, or at least... Ms. Right Now.

CpRW: Site Up

I've made serveral references to an "Open Source Movie" I'm working on. Its called "Cyberpunk Ride West". The script is still being written, and I'm not sure yet when I'll try assemble cast and crew. I don't think there's much point trying to get people involved until the script is done. However, there are some musical numbers in the movie, 2 of which have lyrics written. If anyone would consider composing music for them, check out the lyrics and see if you want to get involved.

I don't consider myself musically talented in any way. If you can improve on the lyrics, go for it.

This blog will not be broadcasting minor status updates of CpRW, as OpenSourceVideo is really just to track all my skits and stock footage. But I'll make another CpRW post when I'm ready to start actively looking for participants.

This is 1280x720x30p ("720p") footage in MPEG2 form. Vegas 6 takes it fine not sure what else will. Its not as interesting to look at as my earlier nightime NTSC traffic shots... but its HDTV if you're wanting to try out that format.

This is my first skit shot on HDTV, 1280x720x30p. While the finished product doesn't exactly scream HDTV, trust me it was a heck of a lot easier to crop and retouch shots without the damn dirty interlaced fields.

Watch the license. I used music tracks off ccmixter.org and couldn't secure commerical re-use from everyone, so the skit itself is under a more restrictive license. But (as I'm trying to always do now) I've uploaded the raw footage with wider cuts (and usual license) for easier reuse.

Posted the soundtrack to ccmixter.org which lets me document recursively where all the audio components came from.

The MPAA has expanded the scope of their anti-piracy campaign, with spots specifically targeting horror fans, Bridget Fonda fans, and porn lovers. We salute the MPAA in their stuggle against all that is evil.

I'd appreciate anyone reviewing these videos on Internet Archive. Even if ya think they suck.

UPDATE [2005-05-07]: Added raw footage used to make all 3 MPAA ads to IA. Basically slightly looser versions of same footage, dialogue audio only.

I was not very well prepared for the shoot, as did not have any warning. Just had time to borrow friend's camera (so could do 2 camera shoot), and stick one on a tripod. Dr. Lyon later emailed me a copy of his Power Point presentation , which I've incorporated into the video.
